Nebraska Sen. Johanns says he won't seek 2nd term

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) ? U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska announced Monday that he will not seek re-election in 2014, saying he wants a "quieter time" to focus on his family following a busy political career that included a stint as governor and President George W. Bush's agriculture secretary.

The Nebraska Republican announced that he was retiring from the Senate after one term. He said he and his wife, Stephanie, had decided that the time has come "to close this chapter of our lives."

"During these many years, we have cherished our time together," the couple said in an email statement. "So as we think about the next stage of our lives, we want a quieter time with our focus on each other, our family and our faith. We are also confident that there will be many more opportunities to serve our state and our nation."

Johanns, 62, joined the U.S. Senate in 2009. He served as agriculture secretary under Bush and was Nebraska's governor from 1999 to 2005.

His departure opens a new 2014 race in Nebraska, a solidly red state where Republicans hold all the congressional seats. U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer became the newest member in January, after defeating two better-known Republican candidates in the 2012 primary and beating former Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey in the general election.

Johanns' departure could leave an opening for Republican Gov. Dave Heineman, who is leaving office in 2014 because of term limits. Heineman was courted by national party officials after Democratic U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson announced in 2011 that he was retiring. But Heineman declined to enter the race at the time, saying he wanted to focus on his work as governor.

In a statement, Heineman called Johanns "a remarkably outstanding public official."

"We are forever thankful for his commitment to serving our citizens, in particular, our farmers and ranchers, and our veterans," the governor said.

Although he began his political career as a Democrat, Johanns has made a name for himself as a staunch conservative since his election to the Senate in 2008.

In his first year in the Senate, Johanns voted with the GOP 94 percent of the time, including opposing the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. He opposed the 2010 health care reform law championed by President Barack Obama, calling it bad policy even after the U.S. Supreme Court in 2012 upheld it as constitutional.

But unlike many Republicans, including Fischer, Johanns publicly backed former U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel for secretary of defense.

In 2012, when it was revealed that the Environmental Protection Agency was using aerial surveillance to check farms in the Midwest for violations of federal clean water regulations, Johanns introduced an amendment to a multifaceted farm bill to stop the flights, but it fell four votes short of the 60 needed.

He began his foray into politics nearly three decades ago, when he was elected as a Democrat to the Lancaster County Board of Supervisors in southeast Nebraska. He switched parties in 1988, winning election as a Republican to the Lincoln City Council and, three years later, the city's mayor.

His political status ? and conservative leanings ? have only grown since. He was elected Nebraska's governor in 1998, and during his second term accepted Bush's appointment to U.S. secretary of agriculture. He stepped down in 2007 to launch his U.S. Senate bid.

During his tenure in the Senate, Johanns has eschewed earmarks, legislative amendments that allow members of Congress to add money for local projects to national bills in a process that is often obscured from public scrutiny.

Johanns faced a health scare during his first year as a senator, undergoing surgery in March 2009 after doctors found a spot on his left lung. No cancer was found, but doctors removed the lower left lobe of his lung as a precaution. Johanns was a smoker, but quit more than 20 years ago.

"Mike Johanns epitomized principled leadership during his near three decades of public service, always putting the needs of Nebraskans first," said U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. "I thank him for his service and wish (him) and his family the very best in their next chapter. The Cornhusker state will look to continue its strong conservative tradition by electing an equally dedicated Republican leader in 2014."

Brewers' Gamel tears ACL again, out for season

(AP) ? Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Mat Gamel has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee for the second time in less than a year and will miss the season.

The 27-year-old was injured May 1 at San Diego when he hit a wall while chasing Nick Hundley's foul popup, cutting short his season after 21 games. Gamel reinjured the knee Saturday during Milwaukee's first full-squad workout this year.

"It really surprised me because there was no really major event that happened that you would have thought that would have been that serious," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "I figured, OK, he tweaks it. Coming back after a rehab you figure it is not always going to go smooth. I figured a couple of days and he'd be back on the field."

An MRI Sunday revealed the extent of the injury.

"It's a tear of the middle portion of the repair, "There are failures ? 10 percent seems to be the historical number. But of those failures, they're mostly at either end" of the ligament.

Ash said Gamel's knee checked out fine in late January in Milwaukee and again during a spring training physical on Feb. 12.

Corey Hart, who moved to first base after Gamel's injury last year, is on crutches after right knee surgery on Jan. 25 and is expected to be out three-to-four months.

Roenicke said candidates to play first until Hart returns include Alex Gonzalez, Hunter Morris, Bobby Crosby, Taylor Green and Sean Halton.

"We'll look at all the guys we have in camp here," general manager Doug Melvin said. "We'll look internally."

Gonzalez has never played first in his 14 years in the majors and does not have a first base glove, so he borrowed one.

"Ron talked to me about it, but it's not sure yet," Gonzalez said. "I don't want to tell you, 'Yeah, I'm going to be the everyday first baseman.' I'm just going to wait and see what happens and make a decision."

Crosby, the 2004 AL Rookie of the Year, has not played the past two seasons and has only 31 games at first in the major leagues.

Morris was the Brewers' minor league player of the year last season, hitting .303 with 28 home runs and 113 RBIs with Huntsville. He has never played above Double-A.

"It's a big jump," Morris said. "Us talking about it doesn't mean I'm going to get the job. I've got to earn it. I've got to do a lot of things extraordinary. I feel terrible for Mat. Opportunities like this rise all the time in this game. It's up to me to take advantage of it.

Green played 18 games at first base last season with Milwaukee but hit only .184 in 104 at-bats. Hatton batted .274 with 17 home runs and 57 RBIs last season with Triple-A Nashville.

"I think we can cover it with people we have in-house," Roenicke said. "But that's not to say that Doug isn't already thinking about it and looking, because you can't predict exactly when Corey's coming back.

No surgery date has been scheduled yet for Gamel.

"He was pretty good when I talked to him earlier today, but it has to crush you," Roenicke said. "You go through a long rehab period, which isn't fun. It's lonely, it's hard work, boring at times, and now to think you have to go through it all again, it's pretty rough."

Gamel has been restricted to 106 games in the majors since his debut in 2008, mostly because of injuries, including a torn muscle in his right shoulder in March 2010 and a strained his right oblique in February 2011.

"Clearly it's a setback," Ash said. "It's a tough thing just as much mentally as physically for a guy that's spent eight months rehabbing and all of a sudden be told he'll have to start over again. ... He does have time on his side, but clearly missing that much repetition in games is going to hurt him."

Taiwanese film proves a hit with Tibetans in India

The epic Taiwanese film Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale, a saga about Taiwanese Aboriginal resistance to Japanese colonial rule, has found a new audience in the exiled Tibetan community in Dharamsala, India.

Tibetan Buddhist monks and young people alike are watching the movie on their TV sets and computers, Tibetan writer and activist Tenzin Tsundue said.

?My friend Dr Tseng Chien-yuan (???) of the National Taiwan University introduced me to the film and gave me a DVD set of it. He even took me with his family to the film?s location on the outskirts of Taipei,? said Tsundue, who later took the movie to his community in India.

Ever since its first screening among Tibetans in July last year, there has been an ?unprecedented craze? about the film, he said.

Tibetan activist Dorjee Tsetan said Tibetans can identify with the movie.

?The courage with which Taiwanese fought for freedom against the Japanese is what makes every Tibetan relate to the story of Seediq Bale,? he said.

Directed by Taiwanese director Wei Te-sheng (???), the 2011 film depicts the tragic Wushe Incident in 1930 when the Seediq tribe, led by one of its leaders, Mona Rudao, rebelled against Japanese rule in central Taiwan.

Tashi Tsering, a Tibetan Buddhist monk who watched the two-part film with other monks from his monastery, said it was at once both great and scary.

?The movie is action-packed ? the sword fighting is fantastic ? but I was scared most of the time. This is the first Taiwanese film I have ever seen and I love it,? he said.

Sonam Dolker, a young Tibetan teacher, said she was moved to tears by the story.

?I cried when I saw the women hang themselves in despair in the jungle. I wished they had fought alongside the men as my mother did against the invading Chinese army,? Dolker said.

Tsundue drew comparisons between the story of the Seediq tribe and that of the Tibetan people?s struggle for freedom.

?Tibetan self-immolations are efforts to speak to the conscience of the Chinese people,? Tsundae said, referring to Tibetans that have set themselves on fire to protest Chinese rule over Tibet.

However, unlike the tragic ending of the film, Tsundue said, there is hope for Tibet?s future.

?Our struggle for freedom is a challenging one, but we have His Holiness the Dalai Lama with us,? he said.

Sports Illustrated?s ?Racist? Swimsuit Issue

Everything is racist these days. Even the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, apparently. At least that is the latest tempest in a teapot being stirred by our busy race merchants.

The website Jezebel is the latest to stir the pot claiming that because SI used locations on all seven continents and featured people in native garb as a back drop for its swimsuit models, why the magazine must be racist.

The photos shot in Spain featured matadors. In China the model was photographed surrounded by young girls in traditional Chinese garb. In another shot in China an older man in a bamboo cooley hat made ready to pole-push a homemade raft as the model sat alluringly by. In Namibia a white model was shown next to a black man in traditional garb.

Was it highlighting beauty and celebrating diversity? Or was it just stereotyping? Whatever its intent, with its ?diverse? photos, SI can?t seem to win.

The website claimed it was all about race, saying, ?using people of color as background or extras is? very distasteful.?

The Namibia shoot was particularly galling, it appears.

?But even more upsetting are the shots taken in Namibia, in which a black man is a prop,? Jezebel complained.

Imagine, showing a black man in Namibia, Africa! Why the impertinence of Sports Illustrated.

What won?t the race merchants warp to suit their purposes?
